Collapse (also known as pseudo-syncope) is a sudden loss of consciousness due to causes that do not create cerebral hypoperfusion. In these cases, recovery time may be slower. Examples of causes of collapse include epileptic seizure, hypoglycaemia, hypoxia and poisoning.
Individuals who faint are unlikely to lose bowel or bladder control. If this happens, it may be a sign of a stroke.
Falls may be accidental (because of slipping, tripping or environmental hazards) or unexplained, when there is no apparent cause. Syncope is a transient loss of consciousness (LOC) and, if it occurs when the person is in the upright position, may lead to a fall.
Syncope and falls are often considered to be two separate diagnoses with two separate sets of aetiologies. However, although it remains controversial, the existence of an overlap between syncope and falls is becoming increasingly acknowledged. In the elderly, determining the cause of a fall can be difficult.
If it is not possible to lie down, put your head down as low as possible. If you do faint, remain lying down for 10 minutes. Sit up slowly when you need to get up.
