Fresh air can also help, especially if you are feeling hot. If it is not possible to lie down, put your head down as low as possible. If you do faint, remain lying down for 10 minutes. Sit up slowly when you need to get up.
Individuals who faint are unlikely to lose bowel or bladder control. If this happens, it may be a sign of a stroke.
Put simply, fainting happens when there is a drop in blood flow to the brain. When the brain isnt getting the blood (and importantly, the oxygen) it needs, it causes you to lose consciousness and fall down. Fascinatingly (and perhaps counterintuitively), falling is the bodys way of trying to recover.
Fainting symptoms Feeling weak, dizzy, or lightheaded. Trouble catching your breath. Changes to your vision. Feeling sick to your stomach and throwing up.
What Are the Warning Signs of Fainting? dizziness. lightheadedness. paleness. unsteadiness. vision changes. fast or irregular heartbeat. sweating. nausea and/or vomiting.
In most cases of vasovagal syncope, you have some warning that you are near fainting. These signs include dizziness, feeling hot or cold, nausea, pale skin, tunnel-like vision, disturbance of hearing, and profuse sweating. After the episode, symptoms may continue because of continued low blood pressure.
Feeling lightheaded and weak and having the sensation of spinning are warning signs of fainting. If you notice any of these signs, sit and put your head between your knees to help get blood to your brain. You could also lie down to avoid injury due to falling.
When coming round after a faint, the person often feels awful, sickly and may vomit, or even have diarrhoea. Often there is prolonged fatigue after a faint.
