5.17 Letters of Recommendation If kept on file by the person writing the recommendation, it would be part of the students education record and the student has the right to read it unless he or she has waived the right of access.
Please feel free to use a template (like the one above) to guide your writing, but remember to make it personal. Use examples and specific details to illustrate why this person is the best candidate. Choose strong, accurate adjectives over general terms or cliches.
To follow up, send a polite email asking about the status of the letter. You may also politely remind the writer about the upcoming due date. If you dont hear back from the writer within two or three days, call or visit him or her personally.
A recommendation letter should fill an entire page (usually 400 500 words) and contain an introduction, two (2) body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The student should be described in a way that highlights both their academic skills and personal qualities.
You can submit your application anytime as long as you have pre-selected your recommenders. You will never see the recommendation in person nor be able to read them anyway.
Youre allowed to request and get copies of your letters of recommendation unless youve signed a waiver giving away your right to access them (you can still ask for the names of the references).
Only you can decide whether or not to waive your right to inspect letters of recommendation. If you are uncertain, you may wish to ask the advice of people you know and trust (e.g. faculty, current graduate students, etc.).
Since most students who enroll in college are 18 or older, FERPA gives them the right to request access to their letters of recommendation, wherever they might be stored along with the rest of their application materials.
