In this episode of Inventors Quick Tips, the host introduces the upgraded US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) search tool, launched in Fall 2022, which replaces the outdated web 1.0 tool used for over 20 years. The previous interface had a cumbersome design with separate areas for searching patents (from 1976) and patent applications (from 2001). The new search tool enhances user experience by allowing simultaneous searches across three databases, instead of the previous limitations. While this video covers the new interface features, the host mentions that more in-depth search strategies are available in a separate video linked in the description.

The patent databases have options for inventor and assignee/applicant (this is where to find company information) searching: Espacenet - Advanced Search --- see Names - Applicants and Inventors. Google Patents - Advanced Search --- see Assignee and Inventor.
Patent assignment documents can be searched for - and viewed - by using the United States Patent and Trademark Office Patent Assignment Search webpage.
INDIVIDUAL AND JOINT OWNERSHIP Alternatively, it occurs where all parties having ownership interest (all inventors and assignees) assign the patent property to one party. Joint ownership - Multiple parties may together own the entire right, title and interest of the patent property.
Go to the USPTOs online database. Choose the Issued Patents (as opposed to Published Applications) Quick Search. In the right pull-down field menu, select Assignee Name if searching for company name or Inventor Name if searching for Inventor name.
Current assignee: Searches for patents on which a named party is the legal person or entity that currently holds the property rights to the patent ing to the input received from the authority. This may or may not be the original assignee.
The assignee is the entity that has the property right to the patent. Patents are property. The inventor and the assignee may be one in the same but an employee will more than likely assign a patent to a company. The assignment of a patent is independent from the inventorship.
The assignment records, relating to original or reissue patents, including digests and indexes (for assignments recorded on or after May 1, 1957), and published patent applications are open to public inspection at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and copies of patent assignment records may be obtained
Under U.S. law, assignments must be recorded to be effective as against third parties who do not have actual knowledge of the assignment. The statute is similar to recording statutes used for recording real property. Thus, although there is no requirement to record an assignment, it is foolish not to do so.
