Select an image and then go up to picture format. All the way over on the left-hand side, click on remove background. You can select the areas to keep and to remove. It works surprisingly well.

On the slide, select the box that contains your text. Select the Animations tab, and then pick an animation, such as Appear, Fade In, or Fly In.

In the Format Shape pane, at the Fill Gradient stops slider, click each stop (the sliding arrow) and set the transparency as you want it.
To change an objects opacity in Google Slides, select the object, open Format options, go to the Adjustments tab, and use the Transparency slider.
On the Design tab, in Customize, click Format Background. Click Fill, and then click the Solid, Gradient, Picture or Texture, or Pattern option. Choose the background fills that you want.
