File an Expungement or Sealing Petition in Illinois in Person. To file an expungement or sealing petition in person, you must go to the courthouse in the county (or district) that has your records. Hand your petition directly to the circuit court clerk and pay the filing fee.

To expunge is to erase or remove completely. In law, expungement is the process by which a record of criminal conviction is destroyed or sealed from state or federal record.
The expungement and sealing processes are nearly identical. First, you must file a petition and pay a fee with the circuit clerk in the county in which the arrests occurred or the charges were brought. If you were arrested or charged in multiple counties, then you must file a petition in each of those county.
Unfortunately, contrary to popular misconception, a California conviction that is expunged will not be eliminated from an FBI background check, a crucial document for Americans applying for second citizenship. This means the conviction will not be wiped away from the FBI background check as if it never happened.
If your Illinois case cannot be expunged (erased), you may be able to seal (hide) it. When a record is sealed, it cannot be seen by the general public, including landlords and most employers. However, employers required by law to do background checks can still see sealed felony convictions.
