During the life of these foams, air from the atmosphere diffuses in and the trapped gases diffuse out. The result is polyiso and XPS lose R-value over their lifetime.
XPS foam insulation has a consistent long-term thermal resistance even in wet conditions and at low temperatures. It maintains its thermal and mechanical performance throughout the life of the building. It is incredibly durable and has a high compressive strength for heavy and dynamic loads.
Determining the best rigid foam insulation is more complicated than looking into initial R-values alone, especially in below grade insulation projects. While XPS has an initially high R-value of 5 per inch, it is not stable and will degrade over time.
A popular rigid insulation choice, XPS features an initial R-value of R-5 per inch. That said, the long term R-values of this foam board decline over time. For example, after just 5 years, an XPS board will see its R-value fall by 10%, and even more going forward.
The XPS foam insulation boards mustnt contain nails/tape/wood pieces, or other things, as these cannot be a part of the recycling process. The collection of used XPS foam could be in a recycling station, where companies and private persons can drop off their used XPS for this material to be recycled.
Owens Corning recommends covering FOAMULAR extruded polystyrene (XPS) rigid insulation as soon as possible following installation due to the potential for damage from ultra-violet light (UV). If FOAMULAR insulation is not covered immediately, it is recommended that it be covered within 60 days.
Problems with XPS Insulation The blowing agents in the manufacturing process may deplete over time, lessening the insulation value. XPSs low-permeability can lead to condensation and mold problems. Over time, the gas bubbles within the XPS leak out, leaving air that lessens the panels insulation value.
Cons of XPS: Higher cost compared to EPS. Heavier weight, which can make it more difficult to handle and . Lower R-value per inch of thickness compared to EPS. More difficult to recycle, as it is often coated with materials that make it difficult to separate the polystyrene from other materials.
