okay so now I want to talk a little bit about a couple really common mistakes in writing um that students often make uh which are runon sentences and comma splices okay so the first one the run-on sentence simply means when you put two or more independent clauses in one sentence without the proper punctuation in fact usually with no punctuation at all if you look at these two examples Amanda has a good job she never has to worry about money and from the Second Story came a cry for help firefighters rushed into the burning building now those are run-on sentences because you have two complete ideas um and no punctuation so in order to fix that you have to insert um either a comma and a coordinating conjunction or a semicolon okay so letamp;#39;s take a look at some revised versions Amanda has a good job so she never has to worry about money or with just a semicolon Amanda has a good job she never has to worry about money and the second sentence from the Second Story came a cry for help

As a general rule, you should use a comma to introduce quoted material or dialogue.
As a general rule, you should use a comma to introduce quoted material or dialogue. Thats because in most types of dialogue, the quoted material stands apart from the surrounding text. In grammatical terms, its syntactically independent. Here are two examples from the first book in the Game of Thrones series.
Do you have a quotation that is too long and mostly meaningless? You can use an ellipsisthree consecutive periods, with one space around each ( . . . )to leave out extra or unnecessary words. The ellipsis represents information that you are omitting from a quotation.
Using a period to fix a comma splice You can replace the comma with a period so that each of the independent clauses is a separate sentence.
When you include quoted material or dialogue in a sentence then you should precede it with a comma unless it fits into the flow of the sentence seamlessly, e.g. The President said that there is no smoking gun to be found.
You can omit the comma if the clauses are both short. Examples: I have painted the entire house, but he is still working on sanding the doors. I paint and he writes. Use the comma to separate two sentences if it will help avoid confusion.
The comma ( , ) is one of the most commonly misused forms of punctuation. Omitting a comma causes information to run together, leading to a change in meaning or loss of clarity. Excessive commas cause information to become choppy and disconnected, confusing the reader.
