hi welcome my names Alan Simpson and this is a video about getting a list of files from a folder on a Mac now you might wonder what does that mean what do I care basically what were talking about here is lets say you have a folder and theres a bunch of files in that and for whatever reason you need a list of all the file names in that folder and not just on your screen but something you can print put in a Word document using some code or something like that okay so you need to copy just the names of the files from the folder not the files themselves so step one open the folder that contains the file names you need to copy then select all those file names by pressing command a or dragging the mouse pointer through them then copy by pressing command C next you want to open TextEdit its not something you use off and you can click spotlight up here near the top right little magnifying glass type text edit and then click its name here at the top of this window spotlight window and it s

Print file list to a txt file In File Explorer, go to the location of the folder in which you want to print a contents list. Press Alt - D on your keyboard (the address bar of Files Explorer will now be in focus). Type cmd and press Enter. Copy and paste the following to the command prompt: dir filesandfolders.txt.
First in Finder multiple-select all the files you want to use as the new names. Press ⌘C to copy all the names at once to a list in the System Clipboard.
