Answer. PDF stands for portable document format. Essentially, the format is used when you need to save files that cannot be modified but still need to be easily shared and printed. Today most devices have a version of docHub Reader or can open a PDF in an Internet Browser.
Export PDF gives you image compression, the ability to include various metadata. Save As PDF gives you options to set keywords such as Title, Author, and lets you set Security options.
Save As - Pick a new file that will have the file you are viewing, with all changes made. The changes will not be saved to the original. This new file will remain open, and for all intents and purposes, the original is closed. Export - Save a totally new file with the current changes, and then forget about it.
You can change PDF export settings before you export (in the Preferences dialog box), or, when you export (in the Export dialog box) as follows: Before you export: Choose Edit Preferences, then click the PDF Export symbol to display settings on the Preferences: PDF Export page.
Export as PDF means export current file as PDF but keep file as it is in . indd file format, for example.
Save to PDF sounds exactly the same as what it means: youre saving an open file as a PDF document. Typically, you would use this option when youre already working with a document inside a PDF editor. In some cases, it can also mean converting a document to the format, which makes it similar to export to PDF.
Both are acceptable. PDF/A-1a has stricter compliance conditions, and is harder to convert to from a PDF. As a rule of thumb, if given the option, save to PDF/A-1a from a non-PDF document (such as a Word document).
