Anyone can grade and stamp softwood lumber, but you must stand behind and be liable for your lumber if it does not meet the guidelines that building codes set forth for that grade. If you make up your own stamp (dont forge someone elses), you are responsible for the quality of grading, nothing more.
When a building is inspected, the inspector will look for a grade stamp on the lumber. This grade stamp is the only way for the inspector to determine if the lumber used in the structure is acceptable. The grade stamp is extremely important to building inspectors, as it is required by all building codes.
Grade is determined by the amount of clear surface area a particular board has on its poorest looking side (with hardwoods one side will look better than the other). A higher grade board is long and wide with a large percentage of its area defect-free.
Chemical treatment markings typically show up as abbreviations such as Bor, FDN, or ACQ. All of these abbreviations stand for different forms of chemical treatment that show that the lumber is treated. Lumber tags on the other hand are usually clearly marked if present.
Graded lumber The Ontario Forest Industries Association ( OFIA ) oversees NLGA grading and inspection in Ontario. An example of a grade stamp is shown in Figure 1.

Typically wood that is two or more inches thick is graded only for strength, denoted by #1, #2 and so on. And because stronger lumber has fewer and smaller knots, its typically more attractive. So the general rule of thumb for lumber grades is this: the lower the number, the more strength and better appearance.
