In general, an excise tax is a tax is imposed on the sale of specific goods or services, or on certain uses. Federal excise tax is usually imposed on the sale of things like fuel, airline tickets, heavy trucks and highway tractors, indoor tanning, tires, tobacco and other goods and services.
Excise duty is an indirect tax which has been subsumed by the Goods and Services Tax or GST. However, there are certain items on which excise duty is still charged. For example, alcohol, tobacco, and fuel.
An excise duty is also an inland tax in the territory. Excise duties are imposed in Canada on spirits, wine, beer, and tobacco products. The Government Canada imposes excise duty on alcohol and spirits (including wine and beer) under the Excise Act and the Excise Act 2001.
While excise duty is levied on goods produced or manufactured within the country, custom duty applies to the goods that are sold in India but were produced in a different country. Excise duty is to be paid by the manufacturer of the goods and not by the consumer. Custom duty is to be paid by the importer of the goods.
VAT. VAT is payable based on the value of the goods imported, including any customs or excise duty that is due. This means that when paying VAT on excise goods, the trader pays VAT on the excise duty as well as VAT on the cost of the goods.
An excise or excise tax (sometimes called an excise duty) is a type of tax charged on goods produced within the country (as opposed to customs duties, charged on goods from outside the country). It is a tax on the production or sale of a good.
If goods are subject to excise duty, you pay this at the same time as you pay VAT and import duty. VAT is charged on the value of the goods plus excise duty.
