Other considerations when youre comparing cruise lines and itineraries: not only where do you want to go -- obviously if youve dreamed your whole life of going to Santorini, youre gonna make sure that your itinerary has a time in Santorini -- but also, how long will you spend in each port? And this varies dramatically by cruise line. Some cruise lines give you four, five hours in a port, and another cruise line might give you six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve hours in a port. One of my favorite personal cruising experiences was Windstar because they really have an ethic of long times in port. We were 14 or 16 hours in certain ports. Again, thats probably gonna be more expensive cruise lines, cause if theyre expensive they can subsidize that. If theyre cheap, they wanna get you back on the ship to spend more money. Theres an economy to this. But just be aware of how many hours you have in each port. When youre shopping itineraries, itll tell you the time you arrive

Here are the four main considerations: Will passengers choose the cruise because of this port? Ports that fit this criteria are called marquee ports. In Alaska, an example of a marquee port is Glacier Bay. The opposite of a marquee port is a filler port, although most ports fall between these extremes.
The opposite of a marquee port is a filler port, although most ports fall between these extremes. To be clear, this is from the perspective of the person buying the cruise. Cruise lines do stop at wonderful places that passengers have never heard of, but those destinations dont sell the cruise.
A marquee port is a must-see venue that plays a key role in attracting customers for a cruise. The venue is often the main reason the cruise will be selected. A discovery port is a location that is less renowned but offers amenities that will be of appeal to cruisers.
countable noun. An itinerary is a plan of a journey, including the route and the places that you will visit.
If youd rather see the sunrise while sailing south or east, staying on the port side is your ideal choice as well. Choose the starboard side for the opposite situation: sunsets are visible on southbound and eastbound sailings while sunrises are visible on northbound and westbound cruises.
A cruise home port is the port where cruise ship passengers board (or embark) to start their cruise and disembark the cruise ship at the end of their cruise.
