Immediately after opening a file, type gg to move the cursor to the first line of the file, assuming it is not already there. Then type dG to delete all the lines or text in it. If Vim is in another mode, for example, insert mode, you can access normal mode by pressing Esc or .
To delete multiple lines Press Esc to leave the insert/editing mode, enter the number of lines you want to delete followed by dd i.e. ndd and the editor will delete the mentioned number of lines from the current line.
Use Backspace to delete to the left of the cursor. If you need to move the cursor to another line, or make a change, or pretty much anything else, you need to press ESC to get back to Command mode first.
Deleting a Word or Part of a Word To delete a word, position the cursor at the beginning of the word and type dw . The word and the space it occupied are removed. To delete part of a word, position the cursor on the word to the right of the part to be saved. Type dw to delete the rest of the word.
You can also delete blank spaces in a line with the x command. To delete one character before (to the left of) the cursor, type X (uppercase).
Try out the different settings to understand their meaning: Enter characters/line breaks and indentation in insert mode, exit and reenter insert mode and then try backspacing. Users who are not familiar with vi behaviour and dont insist on using plain vi (not recommened anyway) should :set backspace=indent, eol, start .
If you press Esc and then Shift-g without specifying a line number, it will take you to the last line in the file. To look for the next occurrence after the first, either press n or press / again and then press Enter . To go back to a previous occurrence, press Shift-n .
