A dirty encoder strip could cause misalignments, like this. The encoder strip or timing strip is this thin, clear plastic strip located inside the printer. Its purpose is to help the printer to determine where the print-head is located. If you watch with a lens you can see that the encoder strip contains hundreds of tiny black vertical lines. An optical sensor on the back of the cartridges holder reads the black lines, and adjust the speed and the position of the print-head during the printing operation. Over time, the encoder strip can become dirty and covered with ink, affecting the printers performance. If the encoder strip is dirty, the printer may not be able to properly read the position of the print head.
