You can delete an invoice but it depends on your role, who posted it, and its status. Deleting an invoice is restricted to make sure invoicing can be audited and verified.
Cancelling an unpaid invoice with a credit note Often, an invoice can be cancelled with a credit note. Simply put, issuing a credit note will let you enter a form of payment on an invoice that cancels out the amount that is due.
Since invoices are legally binding documents, canceling them must be done correctly by issuing a credit memo. A credit memo, also known as a credit note, is a document thats issued from a business to a customer to cancel all or part of a sale. Its also used to document a refund.
Credit notes can cancel incorrect invoices If a business makes a mistake on an invoice they have already sent to their customer, they must cancel the invoice with a credit note and then issue a new invoice.
Voiding an invoice cancels the invoice without deleting it, thereby preserving historical information for any future audits. When you void an invoice, any settled payments will be removed, and the corresponding payment will be unsettled. Voided invoices are not included in financial reports.
The invoice must be unpaid to be deleted. Select Invoices in the navigation menu. Select the invoice number. Select Delete. Select Yes, delete to confirm.
