The Delete on Termination flag controls the deletion of the EBS volume during termination of Spot Instances: If the flag is marked, the EBS volume is deleted and if it is unmarked, the EBS volume is not deleted.
By default, the DeleteOnTermination attribute is set to True for the root volume. It is set to False for all other volume types. To preserve the root volume when an instance terminates, change the DeleteOnTermination attribute for the root volume to False. Note: You dont incur billing costs for changing these values.
By default, the root EBS volume that is created and attached to an instance at launch is deleted when that instance is terminated. You can modify this behavior by changing the value of the flag DeleteOnTermination to false when you launch the instance. You can deregister an AMI when you have finished using it. After you deregister an AMI, you cant use it to launch new instances. When you deregister an AMI, it doesnt affect any instances that youve already launched from the AMI or any snapshots created during the AMI creation process. Go to your EC2 management console and click on Instances. Click on the instance youre curious about, and then under the Description tab, scroll down to Block devices, and click on the appropriate EBS volume. This will pop up an attribute box which will state the Delete on Termination flag.
