A DNR order form should be kept in your wallet or purse or can be disclosed to health care providers by wearing a DNR medallion or bracelet. By doing this, you can assure that your health care instructions will be followed if you become incapacitated or disabled.
A do-not-resuscitate (DNR) order is a legal document signed by you and your provider. It tells emergency responders and other healthcare providers to not perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if your heart stops (called cardiac arrest) or you stop breathing.
While each state has its own unique paperwork that is appropriate for citizens of that state, there are two general types of DNR orders that are most common across the country: do not resuscitate in hospital and do not resuscitate out of hospital.
A Do Not Resuscitate Order (DNRO) is a form or patient identification device developed by the Department of Health to identify people who do not wish to be resuscitated in the event of respiratory or cardiac arrest.
An intact, unaltered, easily identifiable metal bracelet or necklace inscribed with the words Texas Do Not Resuscitate - OOH shall be honored by qualified EMS personnel in lieu of an OOH DNR Order form.
Question: What happens if you resuscitate someone with a DNR? If you attempt resuscitation on a person who has a valid DNR order, you open yourself up to lawsuit by the estate (read: family) of the person with the DNR order, especially if the attempt is successful and they are indeed brought back to life.
Regardless of the format or the venue, DNR orders almost always follow the same general rules to be valid: DNR orders must be written by medical professionals rather than verbalized. Written DNR orders must include the patients name. DNR orders must be dated. The DNR order must be signed by the healthcare provider.
A do-not-resuscitate (DNR) order is a legal document that means a person has decided not to have cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) attempted on them if their heart or breathing stops. People who choose to have a DNR usually have a terminal illness or other serious medical condition.
