In late December, a new parental leave policy launched for military members, significantly enhancing leave options for families. All service members, including birthing and adoptive parents as well as spouses, are now eligible for up to 12 weeks of parental leave within the first year of a child's birth or adoption. This is a substantial increase from the previous policy, which generally provided six weeks of convalescent leave followed by six weeks of bonding leave for birthing parents, with varying amounts for non-birthing parents. The change, mandated by Congress in the 2022 National Defense Authorization Act, aims to standardize parental leave policies across services and gives equal bonding time to both partners.
