The Eraser only affects edges in SketchUp. You cannot erase surfaces with the Eraser. Click on individual edges to erase them, or hold the mouse button down and drag over multiple edges. The edges are highlighted as you cross over them, and erased when you release the mouse button. Because the Eraser doesnt affect surfaces, you can toggle X-ray mode on to erase edges behind a surface without losing that surface. The Eraser tool will also hide or soften edges. To hide edges, hold the Shift key down while erasing edges. Without holding the Shift key, erasing these edges results in lost surfaces. However, holding Shift down does not erase the edges, it just hides them. To soften an edge, hold the Control key down, or the Option key on a mac. Softening an edge renders the adjoining surfaces with a smooth gradient to make it appear as one smooth surface. You can see the differences here. Erasing edges deletes them.
