- Weve all seen those photographers! Maybe as a guest at a wedding or as an assistant to our second shooter, weve all witnessed the frantic, frazzled photographer. They seem under prepared, rushed, stressed, a little out of breath. Maybe that photographer is you? But the key to being the opposite, to being more of that calm collected pro is what were are talking about in todays video, and thats how to go from being in reactive mode to being more proactive by putting together the perfect wedding photography timeline. Hey guys, todays video was inspired from a subscriber question who asked, What schedule is best? Can you please share your wedding day photography plan minute by minute? A role model would help lot so that I dont forget anything and my first wedding is as calm as possible. This is a great question, because whether youre shooting your first wedding or youre shooting your 100th wedding, having a strong timeline in place is going to be the best thing to set you up f

8 hours of coverage will allow your photographer to document the main parts of your wedding day as well as the end of you getting ready and more of the reception. 8 hours of coverage is usually enough for most people and will generally work best when your ceremony and reception take place in the same location.
Many wedding photographer will have a cut off time, will be there for the cake cutting, first dance and get some shots of you and your guests on the dance floor. If you want them to stay till the very end where you drive off into the night then speak to your photographer about this and the timeline for this.
I need to point out here that editing style varies widely among wedding photographers. Heck, some photographers specialize in retouching, whether they do it themselves or outsource it to a third party company. Some photographers dont edit their images at all.
A sample timeline with a First Look looks like this: 12:45pm Photographer start time. 12:45pm Getting ready photos (hair and make up should be finishing up with about ~5-10 minutes left when I arrive) 1:45pm First look and portraits. 2:30pm Wedding party photos. 3pm Immediate family photos. 3:30pm Finish photos. 4pm Ceremony.
Usually, it takes about 2-6 weeks for photographers to edit wedding photos and get your wedding photos back to you.
It doesnt sound like it, but photography is really strenuous at a wedding. They are always moving around and constantly capturing something, which doesnt allow for down time. Its kind of like a real job- if you work 8 hours you get a paid lunch hour. Or if you work over 4, you get a paid break.
Short answer: typically, no. After reception formalities are over (toasts, dances, cake cutting), you dont really need your photographer to hang around for much longer unless dancing photos are super important to you (1 hour of dancing coverage can be plenty).
If youre doing a grand exit and you want the photographer to cover, that will dictate the end of the coverage. So if you know your exit will be at 10, then you can work backwards from there. If you are not doing a grand exit, Budget for the photographer to be at the reception for 2 hours.
