[Music] for the reason we need good clean health data and good records on our patients are not only just for local reasons but for sharing reasons as well so locally we need good records because we use our data for clinical decision support so if the data isnt coded or isnt accurate or up-to-date we miss out on those decisions support safety work safety networks they also need to be because I think its respectful to other people as well because youre not the only person in your practice thats going to be using that patients records though theres other GPS and the nurse and you might have locums when you go on holiday so its respectful to the patient and to the other care providers to make sure that your notes are useful and clean and up-to-date also we use our practice for population health as well so if the informations not there you cant do population health on your practice and more and more were sharing information about our patients with other providers to different orga

Medical records are the property of the practice and the practice owner. The original records must be retained by the practice for the period required by law. The information within veterinary medical records is confidential.
Typically, states require veterinarians to keep records for three to five years after the most recent patient examination or treatment.
California Code of Regulations section 2032.3 requires that the patient medical records be maintained for three (3) years after the date of the last visit.
This is all depends on the specific rules of your state board, however, most states do require you to release patient records, even if they owe money.
Inactive records can be purged from the active record section, moving them to another location within the practice yearly. How often are medical records purged? For most states, 3 years.
