Immediately after opening a file, type gg to move the cursor to the first line of the file, assuming it is not already there. Then type dG to delete all the lines or text in it.
How to delete lines in Vim / Vi dd deletes the whole line under the cursor. 5dd deletes multiple (5) lines, starting at the cursor. d$ deletes to the end of the line, starting at the cursor. dG deletes all lines starting from the line under the cursor.
First, well need to open a vi session and press v to be in the VISUAL LINE mode. Next, well select the line that we want to delete using the Shift + V keys. So, in the above example, we see that the text Welcome to Linux! Line 4 has been deleted.
We can select and delete specific texts using the Shift + V keys and then using the dd command.
The x command also deletes the space the character occupiedwhen a letter is removed from the middle of a word, the remaining letters will close up, leaving no gap. You can also delete blank spaces in a line with the x command. To delete one character before (to the left of) the cursor, type X (uppercase).
Deleting a Word or Part of a Word To delete a word, position the cursor at the beginning of the word and type dw . The word and the space it occupied are removed. To delete part of a word, position the cursor on the word to the right of the part to be saved. Type dw to delete the rest of the word.
How to Delete All Text in a File Using Vi/Vim Editor Open the file with the editor. The first step is to open the file you want to edit with Vi/Vim editor. Enter command mode by pressing ESC key. Type `:%d` and press Enter key. Save changes and exit the editor.
In the terminal, type: truncate -s 0 /home/document/path and press Enter. Make sure to replace /home/document/path with the correct path to the file you want to empty. If the file is protected, use sudo instead to overwrite it (e.g., sudo truncate -s), but take extreme care doing this.
