Can you leave a job off your resume? Yes you can.
If you worked at a job for less than six months and it is not directly related to the job you are applying for, you might leave it off your resume. Leaving it on could raise questions about why the job did not work out for you. Your work was part-time, short-term, or contractual in nature.
While its tempting to leave these positions off your resume or a job application, doing so comes with its own risks. Background checks may reveal previous employment, and the discovery that you omitted information from your work history can hurt your current chances of finding, or keeping a job.
With respect to applications, the law requires you to keep all job applications of those who werent hired for at least four years. Keep applications from those who are hired for the duration of employment plus four years.
The only way to remove or update your information from an FCRA background check or regulated website is to contest the accuracy records or provide proof of expungement or sealing. Some employers are allowed to see certain expunged or sealed cases on an FCRA check.
Post your resume anonymously Take out specific contact information and instead just list your city and state. Remove the name of your current company and replace with words such as Confidential or Current Employer. You can also simply describe your companys industry, service, or product.
Omitting a job from your resume could raise questions in the employers mind. Not only could it leave an unexplained gap on your resume, but the hirer may discover that you omitted a job during a pre-employment screening. You need to be able to explain gaps, and why you decided to not include a job on your resume.
Once you get past five years of experience, and especially as you approach ten years, its time to start doing away with those older roles that are less and less relevant. Now, you should have enough industry- or job-specific experience that you dont have to lean on soft or transferable skills to win the day.
