Most commonly the format is (1) Summary, (2) Decision, (3) Major Concerns, and (4) Minor Concerns (see also Structure Diagram above). There is also often a multiple choice form to rate the paper on a number of criteria.
Five core elements of peer review are identified. Constitutive elements of scholarly peer review include: fairness in critical analysis of manuscripts; the selection of appropriate reviewers with relevant expertise; identifiable, publicly accountable reviewers; timely reviews, and helpful critical commentary.
Make a recommendation The last step for a peer reviewer is making a recommendation of either accept, reject, revise, or transfer. Be sure that your recommendation reflects your review. A recommendation of acceptance upon first review is rare and only to be used if there is no room for improvement.
We have identified five principles of good peer review: Content Integrity, Content Ethics, Fairness, Usefulness, and Timeliness.
They will check that your paper meets the basic requirements of the journal, such as word count, language clarity, and format. Has the author included everything thats needed for peer review? They will check that there is an abstract, author affiliation details, any figures, and research-funder information.
If during the course of our review of your engagements, we find any issues we will discuss them with you, to ensure we have our facts straight and theres no misunderstandings. If needed, we will create a Matter for Further Consideration (MFC) and if warranted, a Finding for Further Consideration (FFC).
Peer review is the system used to assess the quality of a manuscript before it is published. Independent researchers in the relevant research area assess submitted manuscripts for originality, validity and significance to help editors determine whether a manuscript should be published in their journal.
What does a good peer review look like? Start with a (very) brief summary of the paper. Next, give the Editor an overview of what you thought of the paper. The rest of your review should provide detailed comments about the manuscript. Remember that you have two audiences: the Editor and the authors.
