She writes, I was told the BMI chart is somewhat inaccurate as it doesnt take into account muscle mass which is heavier than fat and many other factors. Is there any other weight maintaining/losing test out there that is more accurate? And this is a very astute observation because the BMI, Body Mass Index, is Look, its still used but its not the end all be all. And its just interesting that she asked this question because theres a period of time where I was considered overweight because I had a fair amount of muscle mass. And you know, a better thing to use if youre tracking at home, obviously you want to know what your weight is, its worthwhile to know your BMI but a measuring tape, because if you measure your waist you can actually get a good indication of the amount of abdominal fat and th

Though it has been used for decades as the go-to measurement for health based on body size, it has been widely criticized for its oversimplification of what being healthy really means. In fact, many claim BMI is outdated and inaccurate and shouldnt be used in medical and fitness settings.
Reducing BMI requires losing weight through a healthy diet and exercise. While quick weight loss is possible, its not recommended: It can slow your metabolism and compromise your health. Health experts recommend a weight loss of one to two pounds per week.
BMI (body mass index), which is based on the height and weight of a person, is an inaccurate measure of body fat content and does not take into account muscle mass, bone density, overall body composition, and racial and sex differences, say researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania.
BMI is a very loose measurement. However, it is often the custom to round down for height. The manner that your weight is distributed is also important. Your surgeon will be best able to guide you as he/she knows you and the scope of surgery.
Body Mass Index biggest flaw is that it does not take into account the persons body fat versus muscle (lean tissue) content. Muscle weighs more than fat (it is denser, a cubic inch of muscle weighs more than a cubic inch of fat).
If you have a high muscle mass, your BMI is going to be higher. As Business Insiders Erin Brodwin explained in a post, BMI doesnt account for body composition, including differentiating between muscle mass and fat.
Follow a healthy diet Eating healthy and on time is extremely important if you wish to maintain a healthy weight. Make sure that your body receives all the nutrition it requires and cut down on junk food. Consuming a lot of junk food is one of the easiest ways to gain weight and increase your BMI.
