Before Enrolling at UCLA You can satisfy the Entry-Level Writing Requirement if you: Score 680 or higher on the Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing section of the SAT. Achieve a score of 30 or better on the ACT, English Language Arts or 63 or better on the ACT, English Plus Reading.
Once an Admitted student begins courses at Berkeley, and the requirement has not otherwise been met, students must complete COLWRIT R1A. A grade of C or higher is will satisfy both Entry Level Writing and Part A of the Reading and Composition requirement.
To have the best shot of getting in, you should aim for the 75th percentile, with a 1530 SAT or a 34 ACT. You should also have a 3.89 GPA or higher. If your GPA is lower than this, you need to compensate with a higher SAT/ACT score.
The ELWR may be fulfilled by meeting set scores on standardized/AP/IB exams, completing a transferable college course, or passing the Analytical Writing Placement Exam as a high school senior (offered for the final time May 2022).
Students may also meet the requirement by earning a grade of C or better in a UC-transferable English composition course from an accredited college or university, prior to enrollment at UC. The course must be worth 3 semester or 4 quarter units.
You must satisfy the ELWR before the start of the 4th quarter of enrollment. Except students placed into Writing 25 who must satisfy ELWR before the start of the 5th quarter of enrollment. If you earn an AWPE-MLS (previously AWPE-ELL) score of 2-5 on the AWPE, you will be placed into the Multilingual Curriculum (MLC).
All students entering UC as freshmen must fulfill the Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR), either by demonstrating proficiency through qualifying test scores, UC- transferable college English composition courses or by passing the Analytical Writing Placement Examination (AWPE).
The first is the Analytical Writing Placement Test (AWPE). This exam is usually required for all incoming, non-international students unless you are otherwise exempt.
