greetings everyone if you have word 2013 or newer so 2013 or 2016 and thats for a PC sorry not for the Mac you can map content controls without having to do any computer programming which is a great thing Ive shown how to do this with document properties before with older versions of Word or the newer ones which works great but using document properties youre limited to the properties that come with Microsoft Word so today Im going to show you how you can do it without those limitations you can use as many content controls as you want and you can have as many of any type as you want for example with the word document properties theres only one date field so if you have two or three dates or trying to keep track of the document properties wont work so there are a few steps involved a little more than your average document but Ill show you the first thing is you need to make whats called a custom XML part and that will get attached to your document now Im just going to show you

The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. It was derived from an older standard format called SGML (ISO 8879), in order to be more suitable for Web use.
The Open XML format (. docx/. xlsx/. pptx) is the default format in all supported versions of Microsoft Office and, unless you have a specific reason to use a different format, it's the format we recommend using for your Office files.

docx file is an Open XML formatted Microsoft Word document. Not all applications can read all file format; and in some cases an application may only be able to read parts of the file. For example, a application may be able to read the text, but not the formatting, of a file that uses a format other than its own.
If you want to open an XML file and edit it, you can use a text editor. You can use default text editors, which come with your computer, like Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on Mac. All you have to do is locate the XML file, right-click the XML file, and select the "Open With" option.
This allows files to be opened even if a component within the file (for example, a chart or table) is damaged or corrupted. Support for advanced features Many of the advanced features of Microsoft 365 require the document to be stored in the Open XML format.
Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Save As. In the Save As dialog box, type My XML in the File name box, click Word XML Document in the Save as type list, and then click Save.
To add XML tags to the Word document, enter text (e.g., _project_name to print Project Name) and click the project_name tag that is available as part of the XML structure. Note: For custom print to work properly, do not add XML tags to the header and footer. The text will be surrounded with project_name tag.
XML files can be opened in a browser like IE or Chrome, with any text editor like Notepad or MS-Word. Even Excel can be used to open XML files.
