The reason you obtain a CCW permit in the first place is to protect yourself. So its stands to reason that if you use your gun, it is because you did so in self-defense. Depending on the circumstances, Californias self-defense laws may excuse your otherwise criminal conduct.
The law, signed by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, prohibits people from carrying concealed guns in 26 types of places including public parks and playgrounds, churches, banks and zoos. The ban applies regardless of whether a person has a concealed carry permit.
In California, obtaining a Carry Concealed Weapons (CCW) license is difficult. The sheriff has broad discretion whether to grant you the license. To apply, contact your county sheriff. Youll have to fill out an application and complete a firearms safety course.
Applications for a CCW are submitted online. Supporting documentation (2 proofs of residence in the form of monthly bills) and your California driver license must be uploaded during this process. You may pay with a credit card and schedule your appointment online.
New CCW license applicants are required to complete a training course approved by the local licensing authority, which must provide at least 16 hours of instruction on firearm handling, shooting technique, and relevant gun safety laws; a demonstration by the applicant of shooting proficiency and safe handling of each
Outstanding warrant for arrest (Wanted Person or fugitive from justice). Conviction for a Crime of Violence. Current subject of a Protective Order. Not qualified to purchase or possess a dangerous weapon or handgun pursuant to federal law (a Restricted Person).
Concealed carry, or carrying a concealed weapon (CCW), is the practice of carrying a weapon (such as a handgun) in public in a concealed manner, either on ones person or in close proximity. CCW is often practiced as a means of self-defense.
ADDITONAL POTENTIAL REASONS WHY A CCW APPLICATION/PERMIT MAY BE DENIED OR REVOKED: Applicant adjudicated by a state or federal court as being Mentally Incompetent to stand trial, been committed to a mental institution, or found not guilty by reason of insanity for a felony.
