After Purchasing a Vehicle A bill of sale is not enough to complete a vehicle transfer in Maine. Several additional documents are required before the transaction is official.
Certificate of Title: An application for a Maine certificate of title can be obtained by contacting the Title Unit in Augusta or by visiting any of our motor vehicle branch office locations.
A vehicle is required to have a title in the State of Maine if it is a 1995 model year or newer. Titles are issued for the following types of vehicles: All motor vehicles except special mobile equipment; Trailers over 3,000 lbs.
It can take roughly two to six weeks to get your title after paying off a car. The variables include time for your state's processes and for the lienholder to send notification of the loan payoff.
A vehicle is required to have a title in the State of Maine if it is a 1995 model year or newer. Titles are issued for the following types of vehicles: All motor vehicles except special mobile equipment; Trailers over 3,000 lbs.
It can take up to 2 months for the Title Unit to mail out your new title. It is possible to put a rush on it, but you must request rush status when you first apply. If you used an auto loan to buy the car, the title will be mailed to the lien holder. You receive the title once the loan is paid off.
Certificate of Title: An application for a Maine certificate of title can be obtained by contacting the Title Unit in Augusta or by visiting any of our motor vehicle branch office locations.
You may request expedited processing of a duplicate title application by submitting an additional $10 fee.
