How to Read the Tire Date Code? Look at the sidewall of your tire there will be a code following the letters DOT for Department of Transportation. There will be up to 13 characters that give you the information you need to identify your tire and also identify the date of manufacture of your tires.
At present, the DOT code begins with three letters: DOT. Those letters are followed by two alphanumeric symbols that represent the Plant code, or where the tire was manufactured. The last three numbers represent the week and the year in which the tire was manufactured.
The DOT code consists of the manufacturers plant code, the tire size, brand and the week/year the tire was made. The DOT number is stamped on both sides of the tire sidewall and can be found by looking for the DOT designation on the sidewall.
Tires made in the United States have the DOT serial number located on the inside sidewall near the rim. The letters DOT are followed by eight to thirteen letters and/or numbers that identify where the tire was manufactured, tire size and the manufacturers code, along with the week and year the tire was manufactured.
The first two numbers of this grouping indicate the week of the year your tire was manufactured. The final two digits indicate the year that your tire was manufactured. For example, if your final four DOT numbers are 3020, your tire was manufactured in the 30th week of 2020.
If your full DOT code ends in only three numbers, the tire was manufactured prior to 2000 and must be replaced.
Next to these letters is the tire identification number (TIN) - also known as the tire serial number. All tires produced after September 2009 must have the full TIN on the intended outboard side of the tire and at least a partial TIN on the intended inboard side. The partial TIN does not include the date code.
If your tire doesnt have a DOT number branded on its side, the tire doesnt meet all U.S. requirements. Not all tires are intended to be imported and sold in the United States, so the tire may have been developed and produced without being tested and confirmed to meet the U.S. Federal Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).
