We believe that we invent symbols. The truth is that they invent us; we are their creatures, shaped by their hard, defining edges.
An exact quote should be in quotation marks ( ), or if the quotation is 40 words or more, should be formatted as a block quotation. Then you put an In-Text Citation right after the quotation to show where the quote came from.

If youre using InDesign, your default is smart. Typographers quotes (otherwise known as smart quotes or curly quotes) are a default preference in docHub InDesign. Quotation Marks: There are two types of quotation marks: single ( ) and double ( ). Single Quotation Marks are used to indicate dialogue within another quotation. Example: The girl answered her mother by saying, I dont want to go alone. She appeared to be shivering from the cold (4).
Quotations within a Quotation Use single quotation marks to enclose quotes within another quotation. The reporter told me, When I interviewed the quarterback, he said they simply played a better game.
To use the numeric codes, press and hold the Alt key, then type the four-digit character code on the numeric keypad. Use ALT+0145 and ALT+0146 for the left and right single quotation marks or apostrophes, respectively. Use ALT+0147 and ALT+0148 for the left and right double quotation marks, respectively.
You can make single quotation marks on most computers by pressing the apostrophe/quotation mark key to the left of ENTER. Double quotation marks are made on most computers by holding SHIFT and pressing the apostrophe/quotation mark key to the left of ENTER.
