By default, Plain TeX and LaTeX both have a feature whereby a little extra space is allowed after a sentence (whether a period or other punctuation mark) to help break the paragraph into lines. If you need a little extra space in this line, better to lump it after the period than add extra space between all the words.
The period is used to end all sentences except those that are direct questions or exclamations. Periods are also used in abbreviations. Use a period to end a declarative or imperative sentence. A declarative sentence makes a statement. Use a period in certain abbreviations.
\@ declares the period that follows is to be a sentence-ending period. \[ same as \begin{displaymath} or $$. \\ terminates a line. \\* terminates a line, but disallows a pagebreak.
The rule adopted by LaTeX is to regard a period (full stop) as the end of a sentence if it is preceded by a lowercase letter. If the period is preceded by an uppercase letter then LaTeX assumes that it is not a full stop but follows the initials of somebodys name.
We tell LaTeX that it ends the sentence by putting \@ before it. The first period ends the abbreviation etc. but not the sentence. The backslash-space, \ , produces a mid-sentence space.
Abbreviate names with a single letter followed by a period. If two successive letters are abbreviated, do not include spaces between the periods. If a persons full name is abbreviated, use only first letters without periods: JFK (John F. Kennedy), LBJ (Lyndon B.
Synopsis: capital-letter \@. Treat a period as sentence-ending, where LaTeX would otherwise think it is part of an abbreviation. LaTeX thinks that a period ends an abbreviation if the period comes after a capital letter, and otherwise thinks the period ends the sentence.
Periods are frequently, but not always used, after initials and with two-letter abbreviations (U.S.). Declarative sentence: Harry S Truman did not use a period after his middle initial. Periods should be placed inside closing quotation marks, except when followed by a parenthetical note.
