The IP-PIN is assigned in the form of a six-digit number, e.g. 123456, by the IRS to qualifying taxpayers as protection of their social security number not being used fraudulently or by mistake on their 2022 Income Tax Returns.
An Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is a six-digit number that prevents someone else from filing a tax return using your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. The IP PIN is known only to you and the IRS. It helps us verify your identity when you file your electronic or paper tax return.
You may use our Get an IP PIN online tool to retrieve your current IP PIN. If you dont already have an account on IRS.gov, you will be asked to register for an account and validate your identity. If you previously created an online account and obtained an IP PIN, access Get an IP PIN and log in to your account.
To get an IP PIN that is lost, forgotten, or never arrived in a CP01A Notice, use the IP PIN request portal at IRS.gov. If you cant access your IP PIN online, call (800) 908-4490 for help getting your IP PIN reissued. Dont file your tax return without your IP PIN.

To enter your IP PIN into HR Block: Open your return in the HR Block Tax Software. Click Federal on the top navigation bar. Click Misc. Click Go To next to Miscellaneous Home. Check the box next to I received an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) from the IRS. Click Next.
