The Pap test (or Pap smear) looks for precancers, cell changes on the cervix that might become cervical cancer if they are not treated appropriately.
A pap smear (also known as a pap test) is a vaginal exam that screens for cervical cancer. This is done by taking a swab to collect cervical cells to be examined for abnormal growth and other indications of precancerous/cancerous cells.
Method Of Exam Roll the stick gently between the thumb and index finger. Remove and smear a labelled glass slide. Cervical scrape: Place the longer end of a cervical spatula into the os of the cervix and press gently, turn and scrape. Smear a second labelled glass slide.
A Pap smear checks for changes in your cervix that could eventually develop into cervical cancer. A Pap smear is a simple but important test. In the past, cervical cancer was a leading cause of death in women.
Avoid intercourse, douching, or using any vaginal medicines or spermicidal foams, creams or jellies for two days before having a Pap smear, as these may wash away or obscure abnormal cells. Try not to schedule a Pap smear during your menstrual period. Its best to avoid this time of your cycle, if possible.
These cell changes are usually more serious than ASC (atypical squamous cells). This means there is a greater risk that precancer or cancer is present. This result is sometimes called mild dysplasia. It indicates low-grade changes that are usually caused by an HPV infection.
Results: Among the total of 1699 patients who had their Pap smear done, 139 (8.18%) revealed epithelial cell abnormality.
Your Pap smear To conduct a Pap smear, we use a thin, gentle brush to collect cells from your cervix. We insert the brush into your cervix through the speculum. It takes us only a second or two to gather some cervical cells with the brush. A Pap smear doesnt hurt, although the speculum may feel slightly uncomfortable.
You should start getting Pap tests at age 21. If your Pap test result is normal, your doctor may tell you that you can wait three years until your next Pap test.
A Pap smear or Pap test is a screening test for cervical cancer. It is named after Georgios Papanikolaou, the doctor who determined its use in detecting early signs that could lead to cervical cancer. May 18, 2022.
