Here are the 5 most important things your application should write to logs: Requests. Audit Trail. Availability. Threats. Events.
What is a Log File? A log file is an event that took place at a certain time and might have metadata that contextualizes it. Log files are a historical record of everything and anything that happens within a system, including events such as transactions, errors and intrusions.
From a security point of view, the purpose of a log is to act as a red flag when something bad is happening. Reviewing logs regularly could help identify malicious attacks on your system.
Credit card information should not be in logs. SSN (or SIN) data should not be in logs.
For computer log management, the Common Log Format, also known as the NCSA Common log format, (after NCSA HTTPd) is a standardized text file format used by web servers when generating server log files.
A log file is a computer-generated data file that contains information about usage patterns, activities, and operations within an operating system, application, server or another device. Log files show whether resources are performing properly and optimally.
What a LOG File Looks Like. This file, created by EaseUS Todo Backup, is what most LOG files look like: C:\Program Files (x86)\EaseUS\Todo Backup\Agent.exe 2021-05-10 17:35:16 [M:00,T/P:1940/6300] Init Log 2021-05-10 17:35:16 [M:29,T/P:1940/6300] Ldq : Agent start !
2. Build Meaning and Context into Log Messages. Log messages should include meaningful information about the event that triggered the log, as well as additional context that can help analysts understand what happened, find correlations with other events, and diagnose potential issues that require further investigation.
The data contained in these files are usually regular text files. You can read a LOG file with any text editor, like Windows Notepad. You might be able to open one in your web browser, too. Just drag it directly into the browser window, or use the Ctrl+O keyboard shortcut to open a dialog box to browse for the file.
