In XPS spectra of materials, all binding energies should be corrected using a standard. Usually, carbon element with binding energy of C 1s = 284.6 eV is used as an internal standard. You should shift the binding energies of your samples based on this value.
Simply put, XPS uses an x-ray beam to excite atoms on the surface of a solid sample, which spurs the release of photoelectrons. From there, the kinetic energy and the number of electrons that escape from the top 0 to 10 nanometers of the sample are measured.
Analysis of insulating materials by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) often requires correction of the spec- tral energy scale due to specimen charging. A widely used method is to align the binding energy scale such that the C 1s line from adventitious carbon contamination is in the range 284.6285.0 eV.
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to identify the functional states of carbon existing on the surfaces of various activated charcoals. The relative percentages of carbon, oxygen, and detectable trace elements comprising the activated charcoal surfaces were determined.
An XPS instrument contains an x-ray source, sample stage, extraction lenses, analyzer, and detector housed in an ultra-high vacuum environment.
The C-C component may be set to a binding energy of 284.8eV, by default.
The XPS peak signal of carbon = 284.6 eV is taken as reference to calibrate the intensity of the Cu present on the top of the film as shown in Figure 1. Survey scan of the XPS signal of silicon reveals that there is no signal of present of silicon.
Curve/peak fitting is often the only way to extract quantitative information from these spectra. The objective of curve-fitting high-resolution core XPS spectra with a set of component peaks is to separate the photoemission signal originating from distinct elemental or chemical states.
