REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ENTERING AGENCY Have an active missing person report on file to support an entry in the NCIC Missing Person File, unless the entry is for a victim of a man-made or natural catastrophe in which case no documentation is required.
The National Crime Information Center (NCIC) is a computerized information system available to law enforcement and criminal justice agencies. The System includes records of wanted persons, missing persons, and persons who pose a threat to officer and public safety, as well as records for stolen property items.
In ance with 34 U.S.C. 41307(a), agencies are required to enter records into the NCIC Missing Person File for missing individuals under 21 years of age.
Implemented in 1975, records in the Missing Person File are retained indefinitely, until the individual is located, or the record is canceled by the entering agency. Annually the NCIC publishes the Missing Person File data for the previous year to supply transparent data to the general public.
The information on unidentified living persons should only be included if the person gives his/her consent or if they are physically or mentally unable to give consent.
