What is DITA? Weve talked about structured content in other videos, but the important thing to understand is that structured content is content that conforms to a predetermined standard. Content that conforms to a predetermined standard is intelligible for applications and systems. Now, DITA is a unique kind of structured content. DITA was designed specifically for optimizing the publishing of technical documentation. Well come back to that, but first, its good to know *how* DITA is different. Most systems organize and manage content as documents or pages. These documents are written in a linear way. The ideas within these documents intertwine and overlap. DITA content is written AND organized differently. DITA content is written as component parts, topics, which are arranged in maps, and ideally stored in a Component Content Management System. Create a DITA map Choose File New DITA . Alternatively, choose File New XML. By default, a DITA map is opened in the Resource Manager. You can use the available FrameMaker tools, such as the Structure View and Elements panel, to work with a DITA map. You can also include relationship tables to a DITA map.

To create a map: Select File New or click the New button on the toolbar. Go to Framework templates DITA Map map and select the type of map you want to create. Choose whether you want to open the map in the Editor or in the DITA Maps Manager. Usually, opening it in the DITA Maps Manager is the best choice.
The real difference between DITA and DocBook-like XML applications is DITAs focus on modularity, reuse, and interoperation, which results in a very different architecture as compared to more traditional XML applications for published documents.
DITA topics are the basic units of DITA content and the basic units of reuse. Each topic contains a single subject. Topics might be of specific specialized information types, such as task, concept, or reference, or they might be generic, that is, without a specified information type.
