Code 99000 is intended to reflect the work involved in the preparation of a Pap smear specimen before sending it to the laboratory. In addition to the preparation of the Pap smear specimen, it may be used for other specimens.
The HPV test looks for the virus (human papillomavirus) that can cause cell changes on the cervix. The Pap test (or Pap smear) looks for precancers, cell changes on the cervix that might become cervical cancer if they are not treated appropriately.
The Pap smear shouldnt hurt, but it might be uncomfortable. The good news is, its over quickly.
Cervical Pap test (Z12. 4) Vaginal Pap test (Z12. 72)
A procedure in which a small brush is used to gently remove cells from the surface of the cervix and the area around it so they can be checked under a microscope for cervical cancer or cell changes that may lead to cervical cancer. A Pap smear may also help find other conditions, such as infections or inflammation.
For a screening clinical breast and pelvic exam, you can bill Medicare patients using code G0101, Cervical or vaginal cancer screening; pelvic and clinical breast examination. Note that this code has frequency limitations and specific diagnosis requirements.
If the patient presents for a preventive medicine service, the pelvic exam is part of the age and gender appropriate physical exam, as described by CPT codes in the 9938199397 series of codes. However, for a screening pap, the HCPCS code for obtaining the screening pap smear, Q0091 may be used.
What age should you start getting a Pap smear? Patients should get their first Pap smear at age 21. This test should occur every three years for ages 21 to 29. Those ages 30 to 65 should have a Pap test every three to five years.
Doctors recommend routine cervical cancer screening, regardless of your sexual history. Tests used to screen for cervical cancer include the Pap test and the HPV test. Your doctor can help you understand whether one or both of these tests is best for you. The purpose of a Pap test is to collect cells from the cervix.
