When using a quote at the opening, say the quote first and then the author. When using a quote at the end of a speech, say the author first and then the quote. Keep it short and sweet. Use a quote that gets to the point quickly.
MLA in-text citation style uses the authors last name and the page number from which the quotation or paraphrase is taken, for example: (Smith 163). If the source does not use page numbers, do not include a number in the parenthetical citation: (Smith).
A quotation is the repetition of a sentence, phrase, or passage from speech or text that someone has said or written. In oral speech, it is the representation of an utterance (i.e. of something that a speaker actually said) that is introduced by a quotative marker, such as a verb of saying.
For example: Once Jane Smith said something completely awesome: the awesome thing she said. Begin with the quote. If you begin with the quote, be sure to place a comma after the quote and then provide a verb and attribute the quotation to the source.
The following general steps address how to properly integrate a quotation into an essay. Step 1: Introduce the Author of the Quotation. Step 2: State the Quotation. Step 3: Summarize the Quotation. Step 4: Analyze the Quotation. Step 5: State the Quotations Relevance to Your Argument.
An exact quote should be in quotation marks ( ), or if the quotation is 40 words or more, should be formatted as a block quotation. Then you put an In-Text Citation right after the quotation to show where the quote came from.
There are two ways to do this: Signal phrase (Citation in prose in the MLA Handbook): Introducing the name of the author or the works title in the text of your sentence. Parenthetical citation: Paraphrasing an idea or using a quotation without the author/title in your sentence text.
Use An Introductory Phrase Naming The Source, Followed By A Comma to Quote A Critic or Researcher. Note that the first letter after the quotation marks should be upper case. ing to MLA guidelines, if you change the case of a letter from the original, you must indicate this with brackets.
