If you want to open an Office document in Google Docs through the Chrome browser, use the suites Import utility. Launch Chrome on your computer, then go to the Chrome Web Store. Type Google Docs in the search bar at the upper right corner of the screen, then select Google Docs from the search results list.

Select the file you want to share. Click Share or Share . Under General access click the Down arrow . Choose Anyone with the link. To decide what role people will have, select Viewer, Commenter, or Editor. Click Copy link. Click Done. Paste the link in an email or any place you want to share it.

If a file wont open, a few things could be wrong: The file owner didnt give you permission to view the file. Youre signed in to a different Google Account. Your access could be denied because someone removed your permission to view the file.
If you store your files on your computer via the Google Drive desktop software, youll notice that all the documents are saved with the GDOC file extension to indicate a Google doc. There are two things you can do with these files: Double-click one to open it in Google Docs in your browser.
Share a Google Doc with a Non-Google User Email the file to the user as an attachment. With your Google document open in Google Drive, click File, and choose Email as attachment. Allow anyone with a link to edit your document. Ask the user to create a Google Account.
If the file is attached to an email, download it to your computer now by clicking the attachment, then saving it to your desktop. If you received an email message that says (user) has invited you to edit the following document, simply click the button that says Open in Docs to view and edit the file.
