We do not charge a fee for our certificates. Lets Encrypt is a nonprofit, our mission is to create a more secure and privacy-respecting Web by promoting the widespread adoption of HTTPS. Our services are free and easy to use so that every website can deploy HTTPS.
Having a secure connection to a website does not make that site trustworthy. It doesnt mean you can use it safely. As a further concern, little protection preventing distributors of malware from making use of Lets Encrypt exists. Malware distributors have already taken advantage of this.
Why shouldnt you use Lets Encrypt? The biggest issue is that, although Lets Encrypt provides the modern standard of website encryption, it doesnt offer Extended Domain Validation (the green bar beside the URL, displaying the company name next to the padlock). Theres a difference.
On 30th September 2021, DST Root CA X3, which is the CA Certificate used by Lets Encrypt, is expired. This is the source of the problem. Lets Encrypt had planned to move away from the DST CA root to their own root, ISRG Root X1, that expires on 4th June 2035.
Having a certificate that expires after 90 days will reduce the chances of someone exploiting any vulnerabilities that may occur. The second reason Lets Encrypt expires after such a short time is to minimize the impact of mis-issued certificates.
Lets Encrypt SSL certificates is absolutely free and also used for production use as well. In order to Lets Encrypt free SSL, you will need a valid domain name pointed with your server IP and it will issue a certificate for you.
What is the lifetime for Lets Encrypt certificates? For how long are they valid? Our certificates are valid for 90 days.
If youve hit a rate limit, we dont have a way to temporarily reset it. Youll need to wait until the rate limit expires after a week. We use a sliding window, so if you issued 25 certificates on Monday and 25 more certificates on Friday, youll be able to issue again starting Monday.
Commercial users are welcome to use Lets Encrypt for commercial and for-profit purposes. This is an intended use; we dont have any desire to restrict the use of our services to non-profit or non-commercial purposes.
Not Widely Trusted But some organizations are dependent on traffic from more obscure web providers, and this lack of certificate trust can be detrimental. Lets Encrypt certificates wont be trusted from these smaller web browsers, so its up to your organization to determine the importance of this lack of trust.
