HTTPS inspection is the process of checking encrypted web traffic by using the same technique as an on-path attack on the network connection. This is a feature of some corporate networking devices, firewalls, and threat management products.
SSL inspection is the process of intercepting and reviewing SSL-encrypted internet communication between the client and the server. The inspection of SSL traffic has become critically important as the vast majority of internet traffic is SSL encrypted, including malicious content.
This is the purpose for Ful SSL Inspection, to inspect the downloaded content. While SSL Certificate Inspection inspects only the URL (which suites perfect for web filtering only), is not designed to identify attacks, viruses or applications. This features are available on Full SSL Inspection.
SSL inspection works by placing an interception proxy between the client endpoint and the server endpoint, which will decrypt and inspect the traffic. As weve established, SSL inspection is normally done by placing a piece of hardware or software between the client and the server.
Risks: Clients cannot know if they are connected to a legitimate site or not. In some cases, the SSL inspection software does perform validation of upstream certificates, but it does not relay the results of the validation to the client. Risks: Clients cannot know if they are connected to a legitimate site or not.
By definition, SSL interception is a man in the middle (MitM) act because it places the intercepting party between the sender and recipient of information. However, it is not a MitM attack unless it is done for malicious purposes. SSL may be the gold standard of web security, but it does not guarantee complete safety.
The Need for HTTPS Inspection The use of SSL/TLS in HTTPS provides security for web traffic containing sensitive information. While this is valuable for user privacy, it is useful for cybercriminals as well. Malware is increasingly using HTTPS to hide its command and control communications.
Potential Risks of SSL Inspection The biggest potential risk of SSL inspection is that its implemented incorrectly. SSL inspection largely depends on validating the certificates associated with the traffic. Browsers do this all the time, but other applications dont always handle the certificates properly.
