A Caesar Shift cipher is a type of mono-alphabetic substitution cipher where each letter of the plain text is shifted a fixed number of places down the alphabet. For example, with a shift of 1, letter A would be replaced by letter B, letter B would be replaced by letter C, and so on.
The Caesar Cipher is a monoalphabetic rotation cipher used by Gaius Julius Caesar. Caesar rotated each letter of the plaintext forward three times to encrypt, so that A became D, B became E, etc., as shown in Table 4.6.
A shift cipher involves replacing each letter in the message by a letter that is some fixed number of positions further along in the alphabet. Well call this number the encryption key.
Hence, if we wanted to encrypt the plaintext julius caesar with the key he himself used, namely 3, we look along the plaintext alphabet row in the first table to find j, and note that this encrypts to M. We then look for u, and take the ciphertext letter X.
To encrypt a message, enter the message in the Plaintext textbox, specify the shift, and click Encrypt. To decrypt a message, enter the message in the Ciphertext textbox, specify the shift, and click Decrypt.
It is a type of substitution cipher in which each letter in the plaintext is replaced by a letter some fixed number of positions down the alphabet. For example, with a left shift of 3, D would be replaced by A, E would become B, and so on.
