SAM DUTTON: Welcome. Welcome to Google Developers Live. Yeah, were going to be talking today about Encrypted Media Extensions, which you might also known as EME. My name is Sam Dutton. Im a developer advocate for Google Chrome based here in London. And I have with me today John Luther, who is a product manager for EME, amongst other things. JOHN LUTHER: Good afternoon, good morning, good evening wherever you are. SAM DUTTON: Yeah, wherever you are. I just wondered if you could tell us a bit about your background. And I know youre working on a lot of other stuff as well as EME. JOHN LUTHER: Yep. So lets see, my title is product manager of Chrome Media. So right now, I manage all the video technology in Chrome as well as the WebM Project, which is an open media format people might know as VP8, the video codec on Vorbis audio. So anyway, I manage that stuff. But my background is primarily in digital media and specifically in compression. I worked for a small company called On2 Techno

Having a certificate that expires after 90 days will reduce the chances of someone exploiting any vulnerabilities that may occur. The second reason Lets Encrypt expires after such a short time is to minimize the impact of mis-issued certificates.
Having a secure connection to a website does not make that site trustworthy. It doesnt mean you can use it safely. As a further concern, little protection preventing distributors of malware from making use of Lets Encrypt exists. Malware distributors have already taken advantage of this.
We do not charge a fee for our certificates. Lets Encrypt is a nonprofit, our mission is to create a more secure and privacy-respecting Web by promoting the widespread adoption of HTTPS. Our services are free and easy to use so that every website can deploy HTTPS.
Not Widely Trusted But some organizations are dependent on traffic from more obscure web providers, and this lack of certificate trust can be detrimental. Lets Encrypt certificates wont be trusted from these smaller web browsers, so its up to your organization to determine the importance of this lack of trust.
Lets Encrypt SSL certificates is absolutely free and also used for production use as well. In order to Lets Encrypt free SSL, you will need a valid domain name pointed with your server IP and it will issue a certificate for you.
Commercial users are welcome to use Lets Encrypt for commercial and for-profit purposes. This is an intended use; we dont have any desire to restrict the use of our services to non-profit or non-commercial purposes.
