Parenthetical Citations: The first time you reference a version of the Bible, in the in-text citations, give the name of the edition (italicized), followed by a comma and the abbreviated book (see back of handout), chapter, and verse. Use a period, not a colon, between the chapter and verse: John 3.16.
Authorized King James Version, Oxford UP, 1998. In the body of your text, general references to scriptural works like the Bible, Talmud, and Koran should not be italicized unless you refer to a specific published edition. How do I cite scriptural writings? A common format for biblical citations is Book chapter:verses, using a colon to delimit chapter from verse, as in: In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth (Gen. 1:1). Bible citation - Wikipedia Wikipedia wiki Biblecitation Wikipedia wiki Biblecitation
There are three strategies you can use to embed quotations: set off quotations, build in quotations, or introduce quotations with a colon. Set-off quotations are set off from the sentence with a comma. Capitalize the first word of the quote. Notice the signal phrases (in bold print) used in the following examples.
Italicize The Bible and follow it with the version you are using. Remember that your in-text (parenthetical citation) should include the name of the specific edition of the Bible, followed by an abbreviation of the book, the chapter and verse(s). Tips to Help You Cite the Reference Clearly List them like this: John 3:16 or John 3:16-17. When you cite the reference after the quote, place it in parenthesis: For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16, ESV).
The quote can be embedded like this: John exhibits his true feelings for Sarah when she finds him waiting at her door with her favorite flowers and a sorrowful expression on his face (Doe 75). This quote would then be followed by more analysis of Johns feelings for Sarah.
Footnotes, Endnotes, or Parenthetical Citations: You do not need to include the Bible in your bibliography. When citing a passage of scripture, include the abbreviated name of the book, the chapter number, and the verse numbernever a page number. Chapter and verse are separated by a colon.
