Formatting a book proposal A book proposal is a lot like a manuscript, but in addition to the sample chapters, it has a section that functions like a business plan, with an overview, author bio, audience analysis, comparative and competitive titles, marketing, publicity, and promotion.
Instead of the book, then, you write a proposal a business plan that tells the publisher how you propose to write the book. Were not talking about a long document anywhere from 10 to 60 pages but its a crucial one.
While proposal length varies tremendously, most are somewhere around 10 to 25 pages double-spaced, not including sample chapters. Its not out of the question for a proposal to docHub 50 pages or more for complex projects once sample chapters are included.
The average book proposal itself will be between 15 and 30 pages. But book proposal length also includes those sample chapters, and this is where individual projects can land all over the map. If your book proposal is shorter than ten pages without sample material, however, its probably too short.
However you decide to format your proposal, it should tell publishers 4 things: Whats so great about it. Why the world needs it and why we need it now. Why its marketable. Why youre the one to write it. How youre going to get word out. (+ 1-3 sample chapters that prove you can pull it all off)
What a book proposal should contain 1) Header. 2) A brief synopsis of the book. 3) Longer synopsis of the book, if you feel it is necessary. 4) Chapter breakdown. 5) Sample chapter (some editors will not require this) 6) Book details. 7) About the author/biography. 8) Platform/audience.
Your book proposals table of contents should contain the following sections: Overview. Marketing. Promotion. Competing Books. About the Author. List of Chapters. Chapter-by-chapter Summaries. Sample Chapters.
