Designers have a tendency to default to a 12-point body text size, but increasing that to 14 or 16 (or even as high as 24) can lead to increased readability depending on the typeface being used.
Use No More Than Three Typefaces Most often, two typefaces are enough to cover all your design needs. Moreover, you can get by with one typeface, using its different styles, and you will not lose anything.
In print, the optimal point size for body text is 1012 point. On the web, the optimal size is 1525 pixels. Though 12 point has become the default size in digital word processingand also the basis of many institutional document-formatting rulesthats mostly due to the typewriter tradition.
Body Text. The body text size in Material Design is 14sp. You should think of this as the normal font size, and basically everything else a variation on it. For instance, while 14sp is the default text size when the text can be quite long, when theres only a small modal with a bit of text, its 16sp!
Inter is a workhorse of a typeface carefully crafted designed for a wide range of applications, from detailed user interfaces to marketing signage.
Quad A typesetting term for a specified. space size. For example, an em quad is the width of the point size, and an en quad is half that width.
Also, as a general rule, body copy should be 9-pt Gotham type (with 16-pt leading) in one of the following colors: black, white, Lobo Gray, or Cherry. And it should be displayed on an uncluttered background. Remember, it doesnt matter what the copy says if it cant be read.
Regular body copy can vary but in my experience (I began my career as a designer in newspapers) I would average it as 8.5pt with 9pt leading. This is not set in stone but as a guide which can increase and decrease a few points, dependent on the variables above (column width, format etc).
