so good morning everyone and welcome to this webinar my name is Bills Goomba I work as fi e here at know-how and this is session two so trace your embedded system using Lauterbach trace functionality see ok so this is a webinar series in three yesterday I talked about what you need to get started so what Lauterbach software but not about hardware you need and also what you need to have loaded to your targets to get started with debugging and then you showed you what you can do with basic debugging so if you only have the JTAG signals available and this webinar is on youtube so if you wish you can have a look at it again on our know-how Solutions Channel today I will show you what you can do with trace so if you have some way of collecting trace data from your target so what type of performance measurement you can get what type of code coverage you can get and also the code coverage reports that are available cache analysis to see how well your cache is performing and then the context

An Embedded Trace Macrocell (ETM) is a real-time trace module providing instruction and data tracing of a processor. An ETM is an integral part of an ARM RealView debug solution.
ETM: Embedded Trace Macrocell, hardware unit responsible to generate hardware instruction trace. ETB: Embedded Trace Buffer, instead of sending trace out on physical pins, this unit is responsible for storing trace messages in internal RAM.
ITM means you can create a debug channel for sending messages from your code to the debugger. ETM means that the chip hardware can stream out step-by-step how it walks through the instruction stream.
The Embedded Trace Macrocell (ETM) interface enables you to connect an external ETM unit to the processor for real-time code and data tracing of the core in an embedded system. The ETM interface collects various processor signals and drives these signals from the processor.
ETM trace is a high-speed trace and offers a powerful debug mode that helps you get down to the most difficult problems. One of the greatest features of ETM trace is that it is non-intrusive. This means that it is possible to trace all instructions in the core without affecting the execution of your system.
Code coverage is a metrics on source code based on runtime analysis. With ETM it can be done in real time with not noticable impact on timing. Doing so can highlight for example instruction that are not executed during a non regression test.
This is an external hardware device that passes the information from the trace port to a debugging tool, for example, a PC. The debug tool: retrieves data from the interface unit. reconstructs an historical view of the processors activity including data accesses.
The ETM is an optional debug component that enables reconstruction of program execution. The ETM is designed to be a high-speed, low-power debug tool that only supports instruction trace. This ensures that area is minimized, and that gate count is reduced.
